As Pm Modi Pushes For Renewable Energy Chennai Engineering Students Invent
CHENNAI: Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi pushes for renewable energy, four engineering students in Chennai have invented a solar-powered scooter. The idea behind the eco-friendly scooter is to reduce people's dependence on fossil fuels.

Sharath Rajan, student at SA Engineering College, said, "Nowadays many of us are using petrol and diesel vehicles and because of the exhaust from the vehicles it is making the city more polluted. That's why decided to go in for the solar panel."

The students picked up a discarded two-wheeler, bought a solar panel and fitted it on top of the scooter. The panel harvests solar energy which is converted into electricity that charges the battery.

The solar panel needs to be charged for three to four hours. Once the battery is fully charged the scooter can do an average distance of 35 kilometres with a top speed of 45 kilometres per hour.

The scooter makes little noise but as solar panel is heavy, it makes riding a little difficult. Students are also planning to upgrade their prototype.

Keerthi Prashanth, student at SA Engineering College, said, "The next step is we are trying to reduce the weight of scooter and the size of the battery. We are trying to get a flexible solar panel to reduce the size."

While their project has received funding from the state government, the students hope to fine-tune their eco-friendly scooter before approaching companies.
