The Dutch Solar Cycle A Solar Powered Bike

The Dutch Solar Cycle A Solar Powered Bike
A newrevolution could be under way for the bicycle world. It regards the Dutch Solar Cycle, a new generation of electric bikes that runs on solar power. In the last years, the sales of both traditional and electric bicycles have increased to satisfy the demand for more sustainable forms of transport with reduced environmental impacts. In particular, pedal-assist electric bicycles have become popular, since they help you to cover long distances. The only problem is that these bicycles can travel 50 km on average before their battery needs to be recharged from an electrical outlet. The new bicycle, designed by Solar Application Lab in collaboration with the Eindhoven University of Technology, is able to generate energy from sunlight (even in bad weather conditions) by means of the solar panels built into both wheels without jeopardising the bike's functionality. The prototypes are currently in the development phase and should be ready by June 2015 for the 2015 Sun Trip, a bicycle tour powered totally by solar energy, in which Guus Faes, the co-founder of Solar Application Lab, will ride 8,000 km from Milan (Italy) to Astana (Kazakhstan) in less than 60 days. The solar-powered bicycle should be available on the market in about three or four years. The post The Dutch Solar Cycle, a solar-powered bike appeared first on Eniscuola.
